Woman Freed From Bathtub 4 Days After Police Finally Believed Her Neighbor They Mistook for a Kook

Nearly a century ago, a forgotten addresss nearly led to a woman’s death

As we age, our mobility and flexibility become not what it used to be. We are fortunate that most of us have friends, family and material possessions that can help us deal with this but that’s not always how things have been. Nearly a century ago, an aging woman was trapped in her bathtub for four days and was only rescued after police finally came to believe her concerned neighbor who they thought was a kook making up a story.

67-year-old Mary Benson lived by herself in Denver, Colorado. Described as a “stout” woman, she had trouble navigating her mobility in day-to-day tasks. Finally came one day in 1933 when she was at home taking a bath and became trapped in her tub. Feeling weak, she was trapped under the faucets and didn’t have the strength to lift herself or otherwise get to safety.

The poor woman sat in the tub for four days before her concerned neighbor, Mrs. F.A. Jones found her. Unfortunately, she was so flustered that she almost ruined the chance to get her friend some help.
