What’s in a name? Actually, there’s quite a lot. Parents typically name their children after family members, or people and places they wish to honor or remember. Although intent is always the best in such situations, there is not always a full understanding of the history and meaning of these monikers. Consider the history and definition of some of the most popular names in use.

Some names go way back and signify things well beyond the pale of why they are still in use today. They include:

Bethany: Believed to have come from a Biblical Greek town called Bethania, there are dual meanings for this name. One is “House of affliction” and the other is “House of figs,” not leaving someone with great options when explaining the origins of what they are called.

Brody: Sounding rather innocuous the name actually means “Muddy place.” This is believed to have derived from an area in Scotland from centuries ago that specialized in the production of whiskey and other spirits, and was known for its abundance of wet dirt.
