In the history of professional sports, there are few examples of athletes who became bigger stars than baseball legend Joe DiMaggio. The former outfielder played on the largest stage in the world and became synonymous with excellence and adulation. After he retired as a player, he married Hollywood icon Marilyn Monroe, considered an an all-time beauty. It would seem that life couldn’t get any better, but to hear him talk about it, his existence was downright dull once he was done as a big leaguer and married to the most famous woman in the world.
The son of a San Francisco fisherman, DiMaggio starred for 13 seasons with the New York Yankees (1936–1942; 1946–1951), missing three full years during World War II because of his military service. He was known as a player with few flaws in his game, and he was an All Star in every season he played.
