Why Is Benjamin Franklin In The International Swimming Hall Of Fame?
One of America’s most recognizable founding fathers was also an early pioneer in sports
Writer, humorist, inventor, diplomat and statesman are all apt titles for Benjamin Franklin, one of the most recognizable founding fathers in the history of the United States. He was a true renaissance man, who was involved in a never ending stream of activities throughout his life; many of which are still surprising. This includes his lifelong affinity for the water, which resulted in his induction in the International Swimming Hall of Fame.
Born in Boston in 1706, Franklin moved to Philadelphia as a young man. His clever wit as a writer and scholar quickly built his reputation, making him a well-known public figure by the time he reached adulthood. During a lengthy career in public service, he served as the Postmaster General for British America, the first American Postmaster General, Minister to France and Sweden, and Speaker of the Pennsylvania Assembly. Of course, in his final years he was a significant contributor at the Continental Congress and played a pivotal role in the drafting of the Declaration of Independence.
