Hall-of-Fame outfielder Mickey Mantle is one of the handful of brightest stars the game of baseball has ever seen. Despite passing away nearly 30 years ago, his natural talent contributed to eye-popping statistics and a lot of winning with the New York Yankees. However, being one of the greatest athletes in professional sports didn’t mean he was immune from taking extraordinary measures to provide for his family. That’s why he revealed why he was working in the Oklahoma lead and zinc mines after winning the World Series.
An multi-generational athletic phenomenon who could hit, hit for power, throw and run like the wind (at least early in his career), Mantle was a starter with the mighty Yankees at the tender age of 19. He replaced the irreplaceable Joe DiMaggio in center field, when the veteran retired following the younger player’s rookie season.
