Baseball Hall of Famer Babe Ruth was truly larger than life. His unbelievable exploits on a diamond made him a folk hero of epic proportions. He became so famous that most fans thought that they knew many details about his life, including his background before he became a big-league star. However, towards the end of his playing career, his sister went on the record and exposed some commonly held beliefs about the slugger that were actually not true at all, and for some reason he never went out of his way to correct.

Ruth broke into his professional career as a pitcher, becoming one of the better hurlers in the game with the Boston Red Sox. As a southpaw, he featured a good curveball and fastball, but as his prodigious hitting ability was discovered, he began seeing more time in the field, until he eventually became a full-time outfielder.

After he swatted a single-season record 29 home runs with the Red Sox in 1919, he was sold to the New York Yankees prior to the 1920 season, and spent the next 15 seasons with them, becoming the biggest star in America, let…
