There are endless items, ideas and places that hold significant places in modern society. Often, we take them for granted but they all have unique origins, including these cultural icons that have interesting firsts.
Stocks: Trading in the stock market is a substantial aspect of the global economy. Investors identify companies they believe have the room for growth and the capacity to become a market fixture and buy shares to become part of their future and hopefully make a profit.
Wall Street in New York is the modern epicenter of stock trading, but there are trading exchanges around the world and the buying and trading of shares existed well before the United States. Amsterdam was the site of the first modern exchange and in 1611 the Dutch East India Company became the first stock that was publicly traded. In fact, for a time it was the only stock available for investors.
The Dutch East India Company allowed share holders to purchase a stake in ship voyages to the far east in search of commodities and valuables only available in that part of the world like spices, teas, coffees and crops. If successful, they could be extremely lucrative, but the…
