The Woman Who Fell 6 Miles With No Parachute And Lived

A horrible explosion sent a woman hurtling to earth but she somehow survived

Some people abhor the idea of jumping out of an airplane with a parachute while others love the adrenaline rush and do it every chance they get. It’s an entirely different ball of wax altogether to make such a leap without any type of safety device. That’s exactly what happened to former flight attendant Vesna Vulovic, who fell 33,000 feet without a parachute after her plane exploded from a bomb; yet somehow she survived.

On January 26, 1972, Vulovic, who had just turned 22, was working aboard a Serbian JAT Airways Flight 367 that was traveling from Denmark to Belgrade. A briefcase containing a bomb that was stashed in the overhead compartment exploded. The flight attendant was ejected from the aircraft at around 33,000 feet (more than six miles) in the air while the flight crashed over Czechoslovakia, killing all aboard.

Although a perpetrator was never identified or caught, investigators indicated a belief that Croatian nationalists were possibly behind the act of terror. Years later, journalists determined that theory was a fabrication by the Communist regime at the time.
