Various countries are notorious for their particular criteria when it comes to immigration and inspecting travelers who are not naturalized citizens. Many reasons are given to prevent someone from entry, but one of the most unusual cases was that of English-born Albert Priestman, who despite having lived in the United States for more than a century as a successful businessman, was not allowed to re-enter the U.S. when attempting to return home from a trip because of his arm — or lack thereof.

As of 1901, Priestman had lived in Philadelphia for the past 12 years. A merchant by trade, he frequently traveled back and forth overseas in order to conduct business. One one return trip that spring, he was shocked to be detained and taken to Ellis Island upon landing in New York City.

Years earlier, Priestman had lost one of his arms 15 years earlier due to a gun accident, and in turn he replaced it with an artificial limb. When he was detained by immigration officials, it was under the premise that they were…
