Although corporal punishment has long been a hot button issue, physical punishments have all but disappeared from Western society school systems. However, more than 70 years ago a zealous advocate for caning children, who sold his own custom canes, went to speak at a British school with the intention of bringing them around to his way of thinking. To the contrary, it turned out that the schoolmaster, who was very much against beating children, arranged for the speaking engagement and had his students grab the crusader, hold him down and give him a beating with his own canes to teach him a lesson.

In the 1940s, Eric Wildman was a young British entrepreneur, who was also very much into physical punishment. He fronted the National Society for the Retention of Corporal Punishment in Schools.
