Victor Hugo was one of the most famous authors in history. The French writer and poet, who produced such luminary works as Les Miserables and The Hunchback of Notre Dame, had a truly spectacular literary career. He was also reportedly quite a lothario, carrying on so many affairs and intimate liaisons throughout his life that when he died the brothels in his hometown of Paris closed so that prostitutes could attend his funeral.

Born in 1802 to a General in Napoleon’s army and his wife, Hugo grew up with a love of writing before ultimately making it his vocation. Writing in the style of Romanticism, he produced many poems and books during a celebrated 60-year career. Since his death in 1885, many of his works continue to be widely read and have been set to music and turned into many stage and film productions.

Hugo married his wife Adele, a friend from childhood and fellow writer, in 1822, and they remained a couple until her death in 1868. It was reported that he was a man of vigorous sexual appetites, and after his…
