The Ridiculous Real-Life Origins That Led To The Movie Methgator

A well-meaning police initiative helped spawn a Hollywood film

The upcoming release of the film Methgator seems so preposterous on its name alone that one can only imagine what was being consumed by those who came up with the idea. However, much like many things in life, including the ridiculous, the story was actually inspired by real life events.

Methgator is an action film directed by Christopher Douglas-Olen Ray in the same vein as last year’s surprise hit by Elizabeth Banks titled Cocaine Bear. Released on May 25th, it tells the story of a Florida community terrorized by a massive alligator whose aggression is only magnified after consuming massive amounts of methamphetamines that found their way into the sewer system after a drug bust.

A Tennessee police department is credited with bringing the absurdity of the suggestion of a meth-fueled alligator wreaking havoc to life when they issued an innocuous reminder to citizens. This snowballed into quickly becoming a Hollywood movie just a few years later.
