Halloween is known for the candy, the costumes and spookiness. However, pranks have also been a long-standing tradition. For better or for worse, playing jokes on the unsuspecting has endured over time. While many of these have been clever or perhaps even humorous, there have been others in the United States that were completely misguided and ended in at best incredible annoyance and at worst unimaginable tragedy.

Halloween first began around 2,000 years ago in the Celtic region of Europe. Naturally, it looked much different than it does today but over the years traditions evolved into what we now generally celebrate every October 31st. Pranking has been part of this for some time, as the jokes represent alleged activity by spirits or “good-natured” retribution for past transgressions. Unfortunately, the boundaries of good taste have often been trampled on with impunity and there have been many Halloween tricks that should have never proceeded past the thought process, including these cringeworthy and sometimes tragic examples.
