The Man Who Begrudgingly Got A Divorce After Trying To Win His Wife Back For 34 Years
It took more than three decades but a husband finally took no for an answer in his long suffering relationship
Romantic relationships are a full-time job and then some. Even the couples who get along exceedingly well have to work hard to maintain a solid union. Sadly, many marriages don’t last, despite many trying their hardest to salvage them. One of the lengthiest known cases of attempted marital diligence occurred nearly a century ago when a man spent 34 years trying to win his wife back before finally giving in and granting her a divorce.
In 1885, Oliver Bondurant married his wife Frances in the Chicago area. Their union lasted nine years, but in 1894, she initiated divorce proceedings against him and their split was made final. However, it was short lived, as they quickly reconciled and even remarried just a month after the divorce had been finalized.
Their second marriage wasn’t to last, and for whatever reasons that had driven them apart, they separated again soon after. This time, it was clearly more serious. No matter, Oliver was still not ready to give up on their nuptials, spending years trying to win her back. He later explained:
