The Hollywood Legend Who Was Killed Over A Missing Dog Reward
A memorable actor’s life was cut short in a bizarre argument over a small sum of money
Although the name Carl Switzer may not resonate with a lot of people today, the actor’s signature character of Alfalfa from the popular Our Gang film series is sure to ring a lot more bells. One of the most memorable child entertainers in Hollywood history, Switzer struggled upon becoming an adult and was dead at the age of 31- killed in a dispute over a $50 reward for a missing dog.
Born in Illinois in 1927, Switzer and his brother Harold initially gained local recognition for their musical ability, which included singing and playing instruments. The brothers were “discovered” in 1934 when their family took a vacation to California and stopped by the Hal Roach Studios. While visiting the studio’s cafeteria, the two young boys launched into an impromptu musical performance (the parents likely hoping to attract interest). Roach himself happened to be present and was impressed enough to sign both to appear in the Our Gang short films, with Harold being nicknamed “Slim” and “Deadpan,” and Carl receiving the moniker of “Alfalfa.”
