Although the marriage of baseball superstar and iconic actress Marilyn Monroe only lasted nine months (1954) before divorcing, their relationship is still viewed as a romance for the ages. Despite being among the biggest stars in the world when they got together, they were able to forge a close relationship that persisted even after they broke up. However, their marriage may have never been if one Hollywood legend had their way, as they ruined the pair’s first date because they wanted to talk baseball with DiMaggio and wouldn’t leave them alone.

The son of a San Francisco fisherman, DiMaggio played 13 sparkling seasons with the New York Yankees (1936–1942; 1946–1951) but missed three years during World War II due to military service. Known as a complete player with few noticeable flaws, he was an All Star in every season he played. He also won three MVP awards, received MVP votes in all but his final season; and was the star on 10 World Series teams, including nine that won it all.
