Sometimes, gravestones contain more information beyond the basic details of the name and dates of birth and death of the person buried beneath. Those are the ones to pay attention to, as they often tell a story about the deceased, which is usually something beyond the pale. “This is especially true in the case of George Spencer Millet, who died on his 15th birthday in 1909, and whose tombstone reads: “Lost life by stab in falling on ink eraser, evading six young women trying to give him birthday kisses in office Metropolitan Life Building.”

Millet’s last birthday has to rank among the worst birthdays on record. The young man, who was roundly considered to be very easy on the eyes, was employed as an office boy at the Metropolitan Life Insurance building in New York City. He had been working there for about two months to help support his widowed mother when February 15th rolled around, which was his 15th birthday.
