Those who attempt to defraud others for money usually believe they have an unsuspecting sucker on the other end, ripe for the plucking. They may be willing to say or do anything to get their target to hand over money or other assets they desire. It’s a nasty game that doesn’t always work, but when it does, it can be devastating to the victim. Fortunately, that did not occur with Alice Rossevelt, the daughter of President Theodore ‘Teddy’ Roosevelt, when a 10-year-old girl made her best efforts to scam the First Daughter out of money.

After serving in multiple high-profile political positions, including Governor of New York and U.S. Vice President, Teddy Roosevelt assumed the nation’s highest office as the 26th president from 1901–1909. Despite running an entire country, his oldest child, Alice, proved to be one of his biggest challenges.

Alice, who was born in 1884, was just coming into adulthood when her father assumed the presidency. She could be independent to a fault, being a frequent topic for the press because of her perceived bad behavior, which included wearing pants, chewing gum and smoking cigarettes. She was even…
