It’s always baffling and alarming when somebody suddenly disappears. But what about when people with strange and unaccounted for circumstances seemingly appear out of thin air? Here are three fascinating cases from history where people appeared without reasonable explanations.

Jerome of Sandy Cove: In what is still one of the strangest and most horrifying stories you’ll ever hear, on September 8, 1863, an unknown man was found along the beach of Sandy Cove, Nova Scotia by an eight-year-old boy. He was dressed in tattered bloody yet elaborate clothing that was not familiar to the region. He was laying next to a jug of water and a loaf of bread. Both of his legs had been recently amputated (although there were footprints around him) and when he was questioned all he could do was mumble incoherently. One word that town officials believed they heard was Jerome, and so he became known by that name for the remainder of his life.
