Fidel Castro, the former communist leader of Cuba, was long seen as an enemy of the United States. Particularly during the days of the Cold War, his status as one of the most prominent socialist figures in the world, and the harsh conditions he placed his country under made him a target. Over the years there were as many as 634 American plots to assassinate the Cuban President, but perhaps none so bizarre as the plan to kill him with an exploding seashell.

Following a lengthy stint as an activist and revolutionary as a young man, Castro helped lead a guerilla movement that ultimately placed him in power as the head of Cuba by overthrowing former leader Fulgencio Batista. Frequently speaking out against American policies, he also allied himself with the Soviet Union, which squarely placed him in the crosshairs of the United States from the beginning. As he consolidated his power, he tightened his stranglehold on his country, which descended into his despotic communist reign, which lasted from 1959 until 2008.
