As a society we are usually intrigued by things we don’t understand. This can take many forms, but is especially applicable when it comes to other people. Such was the case in 1892 when a rural Texas community was flummoxed by the sudden appearance of a “wild woman” who roamed the countryside naked, eating grass and cactus.

The June 29, 1892 issue of the San Francisco Examiner carried a peculiar story out of Georgetown, Texas. It was reported that a young local farmer named J.T. Martin, who lived near the San Gabriel River, had a startling encounter. In the evening of June 27th, he was heading home from a long day of work when he came upon a completely naked young woman on all fours, heartily eating grass and the buds of young cacti.

The dark-haired young woman, described as being around the age of 19 and being in excellent shape, had been seen in the vicinity over the past number of weeks by numerous other residents.
