A Chicago teen sold his family’s belongings when left alone so he could impress a girl
The old saying goes, “while the cat’s away the mice will play.” Those words are in the backs of many parents’ minds when they leave their children alone to briefly fend for themselves. While many kids acquit themselves nicely, there are others who prove they still have a lot of growing up to do in order to earn trust. A terrifying example of this occurred a century ago when a teen boy sold his family’s household effects while they were away on a brief trip so he could afford to go on a date with a girl he was sweet on.
In 1922, 13-year-old Frank Wilson of Chicago shocked his parents with the lengths he went to in order to squire a sweetheart around town while they were away for a couple of days. When they returned, it was discovered that besides their piano and a spittoon, the furnishings of their home were gone. Further investigation revealed that their son had orchestrated their sale for the sum of $35.
