Tesla Declines Millions In Charging Station Funding Because Of Payment System Requirement
The EV leader wasn’t willing to change their way of doing things in exchange for financial assistance with their Superchargers
When public funding is available,companies typically jump at the chance for “free money.” However, strings sometimes come attached, which make such opportunities less appealing. This is why EV giant Tesla recently walked away from millions of potential dollars in funds for charging stations because they weren’t in agreement with the payment system requirements that would come as part of the deal.
Fred Lambert of Electrek reported how Tesla has decided to pass on $6.4 million in potential funds from the California Energy Commission’s Clean Transportation Program Rural Electric Vehicle Charging program for four larger Supercharger stations, which would have a total of 420 charge points for Tesla’s electric vehicles.
Surely there must be some reason for Tesla to turn their backs on this freebie to help grow their network. According to Drive Tesla, a letter from Tesla’s Policy and Business Development Lead in California, Jennifer Cohen, to the CEC read in part:
