Team of Hackers Win Huge Prize By Hacking A Tesla 3 In Less Than 2 Minutes

The EV manufacturer had their tech overcome by a group of friendly hackers in a planned competition

EV giant Tesla (TSLA) takes great pride in the cyber security of their high tech vehicles. To that end they challenge IT professionals and hackers from around the globe to try their best to beat the systems they have in place. Sometimes, this serves to show off their impressive technology, and in other cases they are proven to still have work to do, as evidenced by a French group of hackers who recently won a huge prize for hacking a Tesla Model 3 in a matter of seconds.

Erik Shilling of Jalopnik reported on the recent news to come out of Pwn2Own, a twice-a-year hacking conference held this month in Vancouver. A French group known as Synacktiv took the top prize by overcoming a Tesla 3 in less than two minutes. They did not fully hack into the vehicle’s system, but infiltrated the head unit through Bluetooth from a hotel room, accessing a system that controls navigation and infotainment. Features related to safety were not compromised during the efforts.

The group won $250,000 for the head unit hack and an additional $100,000 for a less sophisticated hack of the Tesla 3. They also indicated their belief…
