Call it ambition, greed or perhaps even boredom, many people spend a good deal of their lives chasing accumulation in one form or another. This can help create financial comfort or be as simplistic as maintaining happiness. Regardless of motivation, here are four record-setting accumulators.

Michael Nicholson, the holder of the most college degrees ever: It’s often said that the time spent in college are the best years a person will ever experience. Michael Nicholson took that to heart, spending 55 consecutive years in college on his way to a record 30 degrees.

During his academic career, the Michigan native received two associate degrees, one bachelor degree, 23 master’s degrees, one doctorate and three specialist degrees. He explained what drove his passion of learning:

“I was in school for 55 years straight. I liked it, and I was getting credentials — so in that sense, I was accomplishing something. I got used to being in school, and I wanted to keep going for as long as I could. The more I learned, the more I wanted to know. “
