Users of Tesla’s home Powerwall are used to routinely saving money on fuel costs and having advanced technology as part of their daily routine. However, some are finding out that they can make money as well simply by having installed their home power source. This is because of a new Texas program that pays certain powerwall users for the excess electricity they generate, which has been earning some people as much as $150 a day.

The new program in Texas permits residents with Tesla Powerwalls in specific regions, including the Dallas and Houston areas, to sell excess energy generated by their Powerwall back to the grid in this new virtual power plant (VPP) initiative. Being tested through the ADER Pilot Project, those wanting to participate must first receive an invitation sent to them through the Tesla app.

Electrek’s Fred Lambert reports that the program is already paying off handsomely for some users. Unlike previous VPPs, Tesla Electric is actively buying and selling electricity for Powerwall owners, essentially serving as an energy retailer. The goal of the program is to protect against peak electricity prices.
