Murderer Confesses After Confusing Victim’s Twin For A Ghost
A killer in 1909 Mexico was brought to justice due to a very odd coincidence
A guilty conscience has been the undoing of more than one criminal. Unable to stop thinking about their crimes and the resulting consequences, anxiety can play a large role in being sloppy about covering up their misdeeds. Such was the case of a murderer from Mexico, who ended up confessing just days following the killing, after seeing his victim’s twin and mistaking them for a ghost.
The May 17, 1909 issue of the St. Louis Post Dispatch carried the truly strange tale of Eustacia Aguillar, a young man from Zacatecas, Mexico. Just days before the story appeared, he had been killed under mysterious circumstances, which baffled local authorities — to the point that they had indicated a belief that the crime may well go unsolved.
Eustacia had an identical twin brother, Juan, who had lived away from the family for years without visiting. However, upon hearing about his sibling’s demise, he rushed back for the funeral without sending any notice of intentions.
