The relationship between men can be quite dicey when one is the father of a young woman and the other is her suitor. Intentions, protectiveness and jealousy all come together in a sour mix that can create some very adversarial relationships. Although the dads seemingly have the upper hand because of their age and biological connection to their child, some younger men don’t always take being treated poorly laying down. Around the turn of last century, a smitten boyfriend took his girlfriend’s stepfather to court after they were forbidden from making out in her house, and he had been escorted off the property at gunpoint.
In 1909 Los Angeles, James McDougall was seeing May Stedman. The young couple were fully in the throes of puppy love, unable to keep their hands off each other. This sat none too well with M.M. Burnett, the stepfather of May, who preferred that things slow down significantly.
The lovers liked to sit in her family’s parlor, stealing hugs and kisses when they could. One night, things boiled over. McDougall had been warned to not be so aggressive in his displays of affection but he just wouldn’t listen. The pair was canoodling…
