One of the most recognizable faces in the world when it comes to fast food is Harland Sanders, otherwise known as Colonel Sanders. Despite passing away in 1980, the founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) is still widely known due to still being used as the popular fast food chain’s mascot and primary focus of marketing. However, before he found success with his 11 herbs and spices, he once shot a business rival in a gunfight that took place over vandalized signs.

Sanders was born in 1890 Indiana. His father died when he was just 5, forcing his mother to find full-time work outside of the home, and leaving him, the eldest of three children, to take care of the home. Forced into a care role, he was proficient at cooking by the time he was seven, sometimes leading his siblings to forage around for food while their mother worked.

Although Sanders’ mother eventually re-married, he did not get along with his stepfather. Independent from an early age, he dropped out of school in the seventh grade…
