Although it was a passing fancy in the 1980s, the DeLorean car remains an iconic vehicle. Solidified as an icon for the role it played in the Back to the Future movie series, it had a short production life but has endured in popular culture. A recent announcement that the DeLorean will be unveiled as a triumphant reincarnation later this year with a brand new all-electric model is set to give it new life.

The original DeLorean was produced between 1981–1983 by John DeLorean’s DeLorean Motor Company. The two-passenger sports car was instantly recognizable by its doors, which open upwards instead of outwards. Unfortunately, design flaws and other quality issues led to the company going bankrupt after rolling out around 9,000 vehicles. Incredibly, around 6,500 are still believed to be on the road to this day — buoyed in large part because of its movie stardom in the Michael J. Fox franchise.

The current DeLorean Motor Company was founded in Texas in 1995 by British-born mechanic Stephen Wynne. He was able to obtain the remaining bits and pieces of the old company, including their well-known trademarked logo.
