How the Alamo’s Villain Led to the Creation of Modern Chewing Gum

General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna is perhaps best known in history for his influence in politics of post-independence Mexico and as the military leader who captured the Alamo. However, one of his lesser known but impactful influences was the role he played in popularizing modern chewing gum.

Santa Anna rose to prominence based on his ability as a military leader. Born in 1794, he entered the army when he was just 16 and quickly moved up the ranks before ultimately achieving the distinction of general.

He initially fought against Mexican independence from Spain, but before the conflict was over he found himself fighting in support of it. So great was the influence that he wielded over post-independence Mexico that some historians refer to the first half of the 19th century as the “Age of Santa Anna.” Few events of significance happened in the country without his direction or involvement.

Upon assuming power in Mexico, Santa Anna eventually became a dictator, using the military to assert himself at home and abroad like the man he admired most, French Emperor…
