How Snack Legend Doritos Originated From Trash At Disneyland
The incredibly popular chips came into being because of a desire to cut back on garbage
Doritos are one of the most popular snack foods in the world. The deliciously seasoned tortilla chips have evolved into a global favorite that now include a multitude of different flavors. Despite their status as noshing royalty they came into being as a result of an enterprising businessman who envisioned the first batch after seeing a pile of tortillas sitting in the trash at Disneyland.
Disneyland first opened in 1955, and due to its popularity drew significant interest from businesses hoping to be part of the grand park. The founder of Frito Lay, Herman Lay, won approval to open a Mexican-themed restaurant called Casa De Fritos in Frontierland. The main attraction of the dining spot was their fritos (Spanish for little fried things). They served lots of these corn chips to the many visitors who traipsed through the park.
Since the frito business was good, the restaurant needed a lot of tortillas, which were provided by a company called Alex Foods. One day, one of their salesmen was onsite at Casa De Fritos and saw stale tortillas in the trash can in the kitchen that had been thrown away because they were considered no longer suitable to serve…
