Chief Sitting Bull, the esteemed former leader of the Lakota Nation, is one of the most prominent figures in American history. Despite his status as a great and respected leader, he wasn’t immune from being impressed by others. This included the first time he laid eyes on sharp shooting Annie Oakley, who truly captivated him. He sent her a huge payment hoping for an autographed photo, but ended up getting her as a daughter instead.
Born around 1831 in present-day Montana, Sitting Bull was a Hunkpapa Lakota Chief who helped unite the Sioux tribes when settlers began seizing their lands. His resistance and leadership made him an iconic figure, particularly when he led native forces in a victory over General George Armstrong Custer at Little Big Horn. Unfortunately, he was forced to ultimately surrender and spent the remainder of his life on a reservation and sometimes participating in Buffalo Bill Cody’s traveling Wild West Show.
