How President Lyndon Johnson Was So Annoying The Air Force One Crew Installed A Fake Thermostat
The former Commander-In-Chief issued numerous complaints about the temperature onboard the plane until a unique solution was devised
The office of President of the United States makes its holder one of the most powerful people in the world. Generally, at least when it comes to reasonable requests, they get what they want. However, there can be exceptions. This included when the crew of Presidential airplane Air Force One, who grew so tired of the constant complaints about temperature from 36th president Lyndon Baines Johnson (Serving 1963–1969) that they had a fake thermostat installed that controlled nothing, but made him think he could adjust the air whenever he liked.
Johnson, a Texas Democrat, first served as Vice President under John F. Kennedy before assuming office following Kennedy’s assassinations. Accordingly, he spent a good deal of time aboard Air Force One ( referred to as Air Force Two when just the Vice President was flying), also known as SAM 26000. It was a preferred method of travel for him, as he logged more than 500,000 miles during his time in office.
