A popular colloquialism is that everybody is born with at least one unique talent. Whether it’s being able to whistle through your belly button or solve complex math equations, it does appear true that there is a lot of natural talent floating around the world at any given time. It is equally apparent that it’s very likely that many of us are too scared or can’t figure out a way to use it — to a shocking degree.

To consider how many people out there at any given time have hidden and unused talents, go no further than popular singing competitions or talent shows on television. Such productions delight in finding improbably gifted individuals and thrusting them in the limelight, often for the first time in their life.

Just recently, America’s Got Talent had 55-year-old school janitor Richard Goodall go through their televised auditions. The unassuming middle-aged man who picks up after others for a living belted out a rendition of Journey’s Don’t Stop Believin’ that was so perfectly incredible that it brought the house down and made him an early favorite to win the competition.
