Iconic slugger Babe Ruth remains one of the greatest players in baseball history. His exploits on a diamond were splashed all over the front of newspapers for years during his heyday. However, his presence in the media wasn’t all positive, as during the height of his career he got caught up in a mini political scandal after refusing to take a picture with a U.S. Presidential candidate.

Ruth initially reached the majors as a pitcher with the Boston Red Sox. The left-hander had a good curveball and fastball, but once his superior hitting ability was discovered, he eventually became a full-time outfielder.

After blasting a single-season record 29 home runs with the Red Sox in 1919, he was sold to the New York Yankees, and spent his next 15 seasons with them. It was there that he became the biggest star in America, let alone baseball. His home run totals soared, changing the baseball landscape forever.
