Beloved American author Ernest Hemingway produced one of the most prolific writing careers in history despite a life marked by danger and bizarre incidents that often brought him to the edge of death. One of his most unusual encounters was towards the end of his life when he and his wife somehow survived two different airplane crashes within the span of 24 hours.

Born in 1899, Hemingway led a charmed life. He was a world traveler before finding fame as a journalist and writer. In particular, his works of fiction resonated greatly with readers. These included The Sun Also Rises, A Farewell to Arms, For Whom The Bell Tolls and The Old Man in the Sea. During his career, he won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1953 and the 1954 Nobel Prize for Literature.

In between writing some of the most revered material ever, Hemingway survived a litany of close calls. At various times he was seriously wounded by a bomb while serving in Italy in World War I; was mauled by a lion; was in multiple car crashes; and experienced serious illnesses, including hepatitis and pneumonia.
