How An Ostrich Named Waldo Nearly Killed Music Legend Johnny Cash

The iconic singer had a close call with a big disgruntled bird in the 1980s

Country music star Johnny Cash became a legendary figure in entertainment. His deep, rich voice was perfect for his numerous memorable songs. Like many in the world of fame, The Man in Black had a tumultuous life, including substance abuse. Fortunately, he persevered and lived into his 70s. However, he almost didn’t make it, as at one point, an ostrich named Waldo not only almost killed him, but may also have contributed to the legend developing a pill addiction.

Cash became very wealthy from his lengthy career in music. Over the years, he accumulated Grammy and Country Music Association awards before ultimately being inducted in both the Country Music and Rock and Roll Hall of Fames. Accordingly, he set himself and his family up with a nice home in Tennessee that he gradually stocked with a variety of animals, which brought him comfort and relaxation. In particular, one temperamental bird nearly cost the singer his life.
