When kidnappings occur, the clock is ticking. The longer the missing person goes without being found, the more unlikely it is that they will ever be recovered. Although Ethel Evans was taken when she was just 10 months old, she managed to make it back to her mother 16 years later thanks in large part to a dead cow.

In the mid-1890s, 10-month old Ethel disappeared with her father, Seth, when he left his wife. The mother had married Seth when she was only 17, and even though the couple ultimately had their daughter, the marriage was rocky because of his unpredictable behavior, culminating in the kidnapping.

Ethel’s mother came back to their Illinois home one day to find both Seth and the baby missing. She held out hope that the child would be returned, but it didn’t happen. Eventually, she was able to obtain a divorce because of the desertion and relocated to Buffalo, New York where she married a wealthy railroad man, setting her life on a whole new course.
