Despite being one of the most celebrated authors in the history of the world, Ernest Hemingway also led a tortured life, which included a litany of physical ailments. One of the most bizarre of these incidents nearly cost him his life as a young man when he suffered a serious injury while attempting to flush a toilet.

Born in 1899, Hemingway lived far from an ordinary life. He traveled the world before finding fame as a journalist and writer. In particular, his works of fiction resonated greatly with readers. Some of his best known work were The Sun Also Rises, A Farewell to Arms, For Whom The Bell Tolls and The Old Man in the Sea. Among his many recognitions received over the years included being the recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1953 and the 1954 Nobel Prize for Literature.

At various times he was seriously wounded in a bomb blast while serving in Italy in World War I; was mauled by a lion; was in multiple car and airplace crashes; and endured ongoing illnesses such as hepatitis and pneumonia. He was also an excessive drinker, which undoubtedly helped get him into some of the hairier situations he experienced. Sadly, he shot himself to death in 1961…
