World War II was overwhelming in the devastation it brought around the world. For years, death and destruction were everyday occurrences in many areas of the globe. Bringing as quick an end to the carnage as possible was a goal held by many, leading to a number of interesting and offbeat ideas. One proposal that could have preempted the use of nuclear bombs and was heavily invested in by the United States in both time and money were bat bombs; literally having bats drop bombs over enemy territory.
One of the defining moments of World War II was the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor in Hawaii in 1941. This act of aggression is what finally drew the United States into the war until its conclusion in 1945. The war was a horrible and bloody affair, with an estimated 70–85 million casualties worldwide, which represented approximately 3% of the world’s population at the time. 2,403 deaths alone were attributed to the attack on Pearl Harbor.
