Although comparing baseball players is a subjective exercise, it’s a near certainty that Josh Gibson was the greatest catcher in the history of the sport. A supremely skilled hitter, he was also one of the most lethal sluggers ever while maintaining a reputation as a top defender. It’s a fair assumption to make that he had too many iconic moments to recall personal favorites. However, that would be wrong, as he once discussed the greatest thrills he experienced during his extraordinary career.

The right-handed Gibson pivoted into a career as a professional ballplayer after deciding against becoming an electrician. It was a prescient move, as he was such a powerful hitter that he became known as “The Black Babe Ruth (Some referred to Ruth as the white Josh Gibson).

An African American, Gibson was barred from playing in Major League Baseball but played in his first big-league game in the Negro leagues in 1930 as an 18-year-old, and was a full-fledged star shortly thereafter.
