For years, perhaps the fiercest global rivalry has been between the United States and Russia. Although they have fought on the same side in world wars, they have also endured the Cold War, with each side holding deep suspicions about Russian communism and American capitalism, and mutual political interference. Accordingly, there has been a steady stream of attempts to spy, undermine and other forms of subterfuge between the two countries. One of the most bizarre was the American CIA project dubbed “Acoustic Kitty,” which attempted to utilize cats as spies.
The CIA (Central Intelligence Agency) is responsible for collecting information about other countries, both friendly and enemy, and implementing initiatives to maintain American supremacy from a diplomatic standpoint. Their Russian (Soviet Union) counterpart until 1991 was the KGB, operating out of the Kremlin. The two sides have conducted numerous projects against the other, with the vast majority being outside of the general consciousness of the public.
