5 Year Old Child Found Alive And Saved After 36 Hours In Their Coffin

A horrible tragedy almost became much worse if not for a quick-thinking doctor

A common fear throughout history has been being accidentally buried alive. This has led to some ever implementing fail safes to be quite certain they were dead before having their remains interred. Although not common, near misses of very alive humans being saved from going into the earth occasionally popped up in the news, with one of the most unusual cases occurring more than a century ago when a 5-year-old child was pulled breathing from their coffin after 36 hours.

In 1904 South Dakota, little Mabel Fearing unwittingly became momentarily famous after her close call made national headlines. The child had been believed to have died from typhoid, and was placed in a coffin in preparation for her funeral. Her seemingly lifeless body was attended to by numerous people; none of whom noticed that she was actually not dead.

The colossal mistake was discovered some 36 hours later after one of her relatives, Dr. E.S. Norton arrived at the family’s home to pay respects at the upcoming funeral.
