American cinema is is a downwar spiral that shows no sign of ending
Hollywood movies have long been one of the most popular forms of mainstream entertainment in American society. Watching a film in a theater has been a rite of passage for most people starting when they were just children. Unfortunately, recent trends show that cinema is rapidly dying and facing a critical junction where the industry can either go belly up or realize the need to evolve and act accordingly.
Make no mistake about it, Hollywood films still gross billions of dollar annually. However, the numbers show a substantial recent decline that don’t appear to have any reversal in the near future. Through June 2, 2024, American films have grossed more than $2.5 billion, but that figure represents a 24% decline from just last year, and a 43.5% drop from 2023, the last “normal” year before the Covid pandemic engulfed the world.
Although figures are inexact, it’s been suggested that the average Hollywood movie costs around $65 million to make, which may not take into account marketing costs that can often match a production budget.
