One of the rites of passage for expecting parents is to come up for a meaningful name for their incoming newborn. While some rely on tradition and naming after a loved one, others shoot for the moon and embrace uniqueness. Such attempts at ingenuity can be hit or miss, and some names have been so far out that they have literally been ruled as illegal by American courts.

Despite the possibility of burdening their child with an inappropriate or cumbersome name, some parents haven’t been able to see past the attention they’d get from giving their babies very unusual names. In some cases, courts have become involved and determined the legality of these names.

In the past, American courts have needed a number of names to not be appropriate, and therefore, not eligible to be listed on a birth certificate. These include:

These names are not prohibited on a federal level but rather as determined by individual states. Although there are similarities among state guidelines for naming babies, there are also differences depending where you are. Common no-nos among many states include not allowing profanity, the use of numbers, symbols or foreign characters within a name.
